Keyboard Shortcuts

Learn keyboard shortcuts and power user features in MerDoc.

Command Palette

The command palette provides quick access to common actions throughout MerDoc. Open it from anywhere with:

  • Mac: Cmd + K
  • Windows/Linux: Ctrl + K

Once open, you can:

  • Type to search for commands
  • Use arrow keys to navigate
  • Press Enter to execute
  • Press Esc to close

Available commands include:

  • New Document
  • Go to Documents
  • Go Home
  • Toggle Theme (dark/light)

Global Shortcuts

These shortcuts work throughout the application:

  • Cmd/Ctrl + K - Open command palette
  • Esc - Close modals, command palette, or exit fullscreen

Editor Shortcuts

When editing documents, slideshows, or diagrams:

  • Cmd/Ctrl + S - Save document
  • Tab - Indent selection (in markdown editor)
  • Shift + Tab - Unindent selection (in markdown editor)
  • Cmd/Ctrl + / - Toggle comment (in code blocks)

Slideshow Navigation

When viewing a slideshow presentation:

  • Arrow Right / Space / Enter - Next slide
  • Arrow Left - Previous slide
  • Home - Jump to first slide
  • End - Jump to last slide
  • F - Toggle fullscreen mode
  • Esc - Exit fullscreen

You can also click anywhere on a slide to advance to the next one.

Vim Mode

MerDoc supports Vim keybindings for power users who prefer modal editing. Toggle Vim mode using the "VIM" button in the editor toolbar.

When Vim mode is enabled, all standard Vim commands are available:

  • i - Enter insert mode
  • Esc - Return to normal mode
  • v - Enter visual mode
  • V - Enter visual line mode
  • dd - Delete line
  • yy - Yank (copy) line
  • p - Paste after cursor
  • P - Paste before cursor
  • u - Undo
  • Ctrl + R - Redo
  • gg - Go to top of document
  • G - Go to bottom of document
  • 0 - Go to beginning of line
  • $ - Go to end of line
  • w - Move forward one word
  • b - Move backward one word
  • And all other standard Vim commands

Vim mode works in all editors: markdown documents, slideshows, and Mermaid diagrams.

Diagram Navigation

When viewing standalone Mermaid diagrams:

  • Zoom: Mouse wheel or pinch gestures
  • Pan: Click and drag
  • F - Toggle fullscreen
  • Esc - Exit fullscreen

Tips for Power Users

  • Use the command palette for quick navigation - it's faster than clicking through menus
  • Enable Vim mode if you're comfortable with Vim - it significantly speeds up editing
  • Learn slideshow keyboard shortcuts for smooth presentations
  • Use Cmd/Ctrl + S frequently to save your work
  • Press Esc to quickly close any open modal or panel
